A native of Palaio Faliro, Greece, Daria obtained her B.Tech. degree in Chemical Technology and Biotechnology from the Moscow Technological University (formerly the Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology) in 2009. She then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue an MSc. degree in Molecular Biosciences with a major in Cancer Biology, graduating in 2012. She performed her Master's project in the lab of Tobias Dick at the DKFZ (German Cancer Research Centre), focusing on elucidating the role of glutaredoxins in yeast cytosolic glutathione homeostasis. She stayed in the same lab for her doctoral studies (Dr. rer. nat. degree awarded in 2017), during which she made use of genetically-encoded roGFP2-based biosensors to elucidate the mechanism of action of drugs, particularly N-acetylcysteine. In February 2018, Daria joined the lab of Joris Messens as a postdoc to work on the de novo design of biosensors for cellular metabolites with the aim of detecting metabolic changes in diseases including cancer.
